Trumpet Shophar
Psaltery נֶבֶל neḇel nabla, Psalterion
Harp כִּנּוֹר ḵinnôr kithara
Tambourine תֹּף ṯuppim
stringed instruments h4482 מֵן mên or chord
Organ עוּגָב ‘ûg̱âḇ or reed-flute
Cymbals צְלָצַל ṣelâṣal

Above are the notes of the study.

Instruments of the Sanctuary (קֹדֶשׁ qôḏeš) Temple.
We believe these sounds are in the Temple and are associated with the Singers Chambers in the inner court. “Praise אֵל ‘El in His sanctuary.”

It continues, “praise Him in the firmament of his power.”

Stereo LXX for firmament g4733. στερέωμα stereōma; from stereoō g4732; “firm”ament, established, i.e. confirmation, stability: — stedfastness.

Strongs continued gives idea of the firmament as the “foundations” of the heavens in the sky.
I. that which has been made firm
A. the firmament, the arch of the sky, which in early times was thought to be solid
B. that which furnishes a foundation
1. on which a thing rests firmly, support

From root stereo- a combining form borrowed from Greek, where it meant “solid”, thus can be applied to the crystal sea of glass. Ezk 1:22 likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal.

{Ezkiel 1:22 And the likeness of the expanse upon the heads of the living creature was as the color of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.}

The “stereo” firmament would have a reverberating sound like thunder when the speed of light(ning), exceeds the speed of sound.

Specifically the megas phone in heaven (ouranos) come about in Rev 12:10; 11:15; 14:2 and 19:2 once the harps are granted on the sea of glass (aka firmament).

{Revelation 12:10 And I heard a load voice saying in heaven, Now is salvation (yeshuah), and strength, and the Kindgom of our God (Elohiym), and the power of his Christ (Mashiach); for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Revelation 11:15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our God, and of his Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever.

Revelation 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder; and I heard the voice of harpers playing with their harp:

Revelation 19:2 For true and righteous are his judgements: for he has judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and has avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.}

Power is dynamis δύναμις which is used here in Ps 150:1, and in heaven in Rev 4, 5, 11, 12, 19.

{Psalm 150:1 Halleluyah, Hallelu-El in his sanctuary: praise him in the expanse of his power. 2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. 3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp. 4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and flutes. 5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the LORD (Yah). Halleluyah.}

Next in v3, the “Sound” of trumpet Echo g2279 ἦχος ēchos; a loud or confused noise (“echo”), i.e. roar;, a rumor: — fame, sound as spoken of the roar of the sea waves. And is used of the wind in Acts 2 and YHWH’s voice on Mt Sinai Heb 12:19.

{Hebrew 12:19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them anymore.}

Jerome and Josephus say Nabla or nebel has 12 strings, Ant . lib . vii . cap . 12 , § 3 , describes it thus : “ Η δε ναζλα , δωδεκα φθογίες εχ8σα , τοις δακτυλιοις ΚΡΟΥΕΤΑΙ . The Nabla has twelve strings

In v4 “Dance” in LXX is Chorus g5525 χορός chorós, khor-os’; a ring, i.e. round, circular dance (“choir”:—dancing.
Choros khor-os’ a band (of dancers and singers) Chorus comes from the Greek word ‘khoros’ via the Latin ‘chorus’, the word for the group of singers and dancers who performed in ancient Greek religious festivals and theatrical performances.

“Praise Him with stringed instruments” in v4 which is h4482 מֵן mên or LXX Chord χορδαῖς this relates to the Piano “strings” playing “chords”χορδαῗς χορδή meaning Chord in the plural) A stringed , musical instrument , probably so called from it’s belly · resembling a jug or flaggon.
In English chord is Latin chorda “catgut, a string” of a musical instrument. Also “Cord” as a measuring line see h6957 קַו qaw; or קָו qav; a rule and a musical string.

Specifically “chord” is guts, intestines, tripe that which is made from guts: string of gut, chord, especially of a lyre or harp (music) musical note

In v4 “Organs” is Hebrew h5748 עוּגָב ‘ûg̱âḇ; or עֻגָּב ‘uggab; from 5689 in the original sense of breathing; a reed-instrument of music: — organ, flute 1, pipe 1; a musical instrument perhaps a flute, reed-pipe, or panpipes

This of course is the reed flute. Now, we’ve wondered why the E flute is in 440 Hz. In Chr 15 Kohath 120, Merari 220 And Gershom 130 add up to 432 Hz. However the 220 as Nethinims, is an A note in 440 Hz (220×2).

H234 right to left h0234 אַזְכָּרָה ’azḵârâ; from h2142; a reminder; specifically remembrance- offering: — memorial, memorial-offering, the portion of the meal (food) offering which is burned

1 Chr 16:4 And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record (וּלְהַזְכִּיר֙ ū-lə-haz-kîr and for the record h2142), and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel

Verse 6 says “Let every thing that hath breath praise Yah.” That applies to the playing of wind instruments but means breathing is involved in “Vessels of song,” Vessels h3627 כְּלִי ḵelîy of Song h7892 שִׁיר šiyr is an expression translated “musical instruments” that the Lxx calls organon ὄργανα  ὄργανον thus involving breath all instruments and by singing. We could say the “organ” of our lungs must always be praising Him! Think of “organism” as anything with breath!

Organ ὄργανον “vessels of song,” wood “winds”
and everything that has breath Praise יְהוָֹה

We see this in the “Harpers” which in Greek is κιθαρῳδός kitharō‚dos two words, one for the instrument, the other “odes” for the singing while playing, thus “vessels of song.”

As you know, it was the realization that it’s talking about an actual organ i lead me to the B9 pedal and to research the other Septuagint words. Now, we’re not saying they used actual organs in the first Temple but like the modern guitar was prophesied in 1 Chr 15, so is the modern piano and organ in Ps 150.

{1 Chronicles 15:27 And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bore the Ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen. 28 Thus all Israel brought up the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD (Yahuah, Yahweh) with shouting, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.}

Organ ὀργάνῳ ὄργανον → English: organum, organ, orgue
ὄργᾰνον • (órganon) n ( ὀργᾰ́νου)
instrument, implement, tool
sense organ, musical instrume

Although not used in Ps 150, it’s a symphony of instruments g4858 συμφωνία symphōnia; oneness and unison of sound in “symphony” or agreement with the throne and….

Symphony Sound of the Wedding Supper
Luk 15:20 Father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.
22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:
25 he heard musick and dancing (choros).

{Luke 15:20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 21 And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and am no more worthy to be called your son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat and be merry: 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. 25 Now his elser son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing.}

Music g4858 συμφωνία symphōnia; from g4859; unison of sound (“symphony”), i.e. a concert of instruments (harmonious note): — music.
Compare root to Agree – g4856 συμφωνέω symphōneō; from 4859; to be harmonious, i.e. to accord (be suitable, concur) or agree together
Aramaic in Dan 3 Symphōny סוּמְפּוֹנְיָה sûmepôneyâ; or סוּמְפֹּנְיָה çuwmponyah, soom-po-neh-yaw«; or סִיפֹנְיָא çiyphonya: (Dan. 3:10 h5481) see-fo-neh-yaw«; which comes from the Greek

The term harmony derives from the Greek ἁρμονία harmonia, meaning “joint, agreement, concord”, from the verb ἁρμόζω harmozō, “(Ι) fit together, join”. In the past, harmony often referred to the whole field of music, while music referred to the arts in general.

g0718. ἁρμόζω harmozō; from 719; to joint, to woo (reflexively, to betroth): — espouse.
I. to join, to fit together
A. of carpenter’s, fastening together beams and planks to build houses, ships, etc.
II. to betroth a daughter to any one
A. to join to one’s self, i.e. to marry the daughter of any one
B. to betroth, to give one in marriage to any one

In music Lxx uses harmonia in 2 Sam 6:5 “all manner of instruments” οργανοις organos, where we get organ and ηρμοσμενοις harmosmenos which combines harmonia with “menos” to abide, thus abide in harmony.

{2 Samuel 6:5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD (Yahuah, Yahweh) on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on trumpets, and on cymbals.}

The name cathedral comes from the Latin word ‘cathedra’ which means ‘chair’. The chair in the church was a symbol of the leadership and authority of a bishop, so the cathedral was the building with the chair. Today, the chair is more figurative than literal.

g2515. καθέδρα kathedra; from 2596 and the same as 1476; a bench (literally or figuratively): — seat. AV (3) – seat 3; a chair, a seatused of the exalted seat occupied by men of eminent rankru or influence, as teachers and judges

I just wanted to provide a full breakdown of how the cymbal, flute (aulos), harp (kithara) and trumpet in 1 Corinthians are part of the Temple Psalm 150 instruments in the House of David!

It’s very important that we realize the theme of the Temple runs throughout the book of first Corinthians so that we know for sure these instruments are in context of House of David Temple praise and worship. Quick analysis shows the Temple, Feasts, Altar and instruments in a Temple service.

▪Architecture 3:10 is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder ἀρχιτέκτων architektōn “architect”

▪Foundation v11 For other foundation (θεμέλιος themelios Rev 21:14, 19) can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones (τίμιος timios Foundation of New Jerusalem Rev 21:11, 19)

{Revelation 21:11 Having the glory of God (Elohim): and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. 19 And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, and emerald;}

▪Temple v16 Know ye not that ye are the Temple (ναός naos) of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the Temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the Temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

{1 Cornithians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the Temple of God (Elohiym), and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?}

And in 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? (See also 2 Cor 6:16)

{1 Corinthians 6:19 What?  know ye not that your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit (Ruach Ha’Qodesh) which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?}

▪Feasts in 5:6 Passover/ Unleavened Bread and in 11:20 Communion and Pentecost in 16:8. See 2 Cor 5:1 for Tabernacles

{1 Corinthians 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

1 Corinthians 11:20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper.

1 Corinthians 16:8 I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost.

2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know tht if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissoved, we have a building of God (Elohiym), a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.}

▪Altar 9:13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things (g2413 ἱερός hieros) eat (ἐσθίω esthiō) of the things of the Temple (g2411 ἱερόν hieron)? and they which wait at the Altar (θυσιαστήριον thysiastērion) are partakers with the Altar?

{1 Corinthians 9:13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the Temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?}

We must not consider this a coincidence once we arrive at chapter 13

“If i have not love (agapē), I am become as sounding (g2278 ἠχέω ēcheō) brass, or a “war cry” (ἀλαλάζω alalazō ) cymbal.”

{1 Corinthians 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and hove not love, I am nothing.}

Some might accuse and say “you don’t love” but let’s recall the administration to the first Ekklesia “I have against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.” This is the first commandment with the second to love our neighbor. Those many of those have left the first love are easily offended.

{Revelation 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against you, because you have left your first love.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.}

However, of we look closely at the Septuagint in Ps 150 we see the “sounding (g2278 ἠχέω ēcheō) brass” is actually a Trumpet in verse 3, “ἤχῳ (echo) σάλπιγγος (salpigx)” or echo trumpet thus Paul referring to it as a brass war trumpet!

Then the “tinkling” or “war cry” (ἀλαλάζω alalazō g0214) “cymbal” is in Ps 150 verse 5 “κυμβάλοις (kymbalon cymbal) ἀλαλαγμοῦ (ἀλαλαγμός alalagmos g214)”

Thus proving the context of Ps 150 is what is happening here in 1 Cor chapter 14 when we see the battle cry trumpet again in Verse 8, “For if the Trumpet (σάλπιγξ salpigx) give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the Battle/War (polemos)?”

{1 Corinthians 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?}

Then the flute and kithara are mentioned in verse 7, “pipe/flute (g0836 αὐλός aulos) or harp (g2788 κιθάρα kithara), except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?”

{1 Corinthians 14:7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or played?}

This shows that Paul looked at the instrument in Ps 150:4 flute as an “aulos” which in Hebrew is h5748 עוּגָב ‘ûg̱âḇ the reed-flute. Here Lxx says organ or ὀργάνῳ.

The Septuagint does use aulos in musical processions in 1 Sam 10:5 “you shall meet a company (χορός choros) of prophets coming down from the high place (bema Βαμα) with psaltery (nabla νάβλα), (tambourine τύμπανον) , flute (αὐλός aulos) and a harp (κινύρα kithara) before them.”

{1 Samuel 10:5 After that you shall come to the hill of God (Elohiym), where is the garrison of the Philistine: and it shall come to pass, when you are come thither to the ciry, that you shall meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy: 6 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you, and you shall prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man.}

And another aulos is in the Ps 150 procession when accompanying the Ark in 2 Sam 6:5 “all manner of instruments (organ ὄργανον) in harmony (ἡρμοσμένοις ἁρμόζω harmozō) harps (κινύρα kithara), psalteries (νάβλα nabla), tambourine (τύμπανον), flute (αὐλός aulos) and on cymbals (κύμβαλον kymbalon)

{2 Samuel 6:5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD (Yahuah, Yahweh) on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on trumpets, and on cymbals.}

Now, yes, when doing worship with the instruments we must have on the garments like in Col 3:10 “put on the new,” v12 “Put on therefore, as the elect” and v14 “above all these things put on love” and then the worship is in v16.

{Colosians 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, hearts of mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.}

Let the word (λόγος logos) of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms (g5568 ψαλμός psalmos) and Hymns (g5215 ὕμνος hymnos) and spiritual (supernatural pneumatikos) Songs (ᾠδή ōdē), Singing (ἄ́δω adō) with grace in your hearts to the Lord. ~ Leeland Jones
